What is Tajweed?

Tajweed (تجويد) literally means "to improve" or "to make better." In the context of Quran recitation, Tajweed refers to the set of rules governing the proper pronunciation of the Quranic letters with all their qualities and applying the various rulings of recitation.

"The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Quran will be with the honorable and obedient scribes [angels]." - Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) [Bukhari]

Why Learn Tajweed?

  • Preserve the Quran's authenticity: Recite exactly as revealed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)
  • Avoid changing meanings: Incorrect pronunciation can alter word meanings
  • Earn greater rewards: Each letter recited correctly brings immense rewards
  • Beautiful recitation: Develop melodious and proper Quranic recitation

Basic Tajweed Rules for Beginners

2. Noon Sakinah & Tanween Rules

Four main rules apply:
